Sclerotherapy Varicose Veins
Sclerotherapy varicose veins treatment is non invasive and is performed under local anaesthetic. The procedure is undertaken by Mr Rajiv Vohra FRCSEd FRCSEng Phd, Consultant Vascular Surgeon who is based at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham.
Varicose veins are swollen irregular shaped veins that often develop in legs, particularly in calves. They occur when the vein walls weaken causing the vein to swell. If this happens it means that valves in the veins that prevent blood flowing backward down the legs are not working properly (incompetent).
Sclerotherapy varicose veins treatment uses an injection of a foam chemical to occlude or shrivel the varicose vein. The sclerosing fluid is mixed with air to form a foam. This foam is injected into the vein through a very fine needle, using an ultrasound scanner too help locate the vein to be injected. The chemical foam obliterates the varicose vein causing fibrous scarring, usually 1-2 weeks. An elastic bandage and stocking will be applied to the injected leg.
This treatment can be used in conjunction with varicose veins laser treatment – Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)
