Many women are leaving starting a family until later in life. Assessment of the ovarian reserve gives information about the remaining number of fertile years a woman has or may predict ovarian reserve prior to IVF treatment.
Ovarian reserve decreases in pre-menopausal women as the quality and number of ovarian follicles decline with age, resulting in a decrease of a women's reproductive function.
Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)
AMH is a hormone marker for quantitative prediction of ovarian reserve, ovarian aging, ovarian dysfunction and ovarian responsiveness.
Serum AMH is one of the best hormone markers to assess the ovarian reserve. Measuring AMH will not predict whether a woman is able to become pregnant – there are other important factors that have to be taken into account – lifestyle, infection, genetic abnormality, quality of sperm and other male factors. It is however considered the best hormone to date to reflect the decline of reproductive function and potential reproductive capacity.
Measurment of AMH is via a blood test, the results of the blood test are available within 2 - 3 days and the results will be discussed with you by your fertility nurse specialist.
