Cervical smear tests are performed to detect early changes in a woman’s cervix, which if left untreated could develop into cervical cancer.
Cervical smears are performed by one of our doctors or nurses. At HealthHarmonie we use liquid based cytology (LBC) smear testing as an alternative to the conventional smear test with the benefit of 80% more effective diagnosis.
In addition, using the same smear sample we offer testing for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). If you have the virus our gynaecologist will develop an individual plan of care, for example they may suggest more frequent cervical smear testing.
Cervical smear tests are best performed mid cycle, however if you are post menopausal they can be undertaken at any time. The results are received by HealthHarmonie within a few days and you will receive a written report through the post. In the event of abnormal results your gynaecologist will telephone you to discuss your follow up care, for example Colposcopy.
The NHS cervical smear screening programme advises:
- Between the ages of 25 – 49 smear tests should be done three yearly
- Between the ages of 50-64 cervical screening tests should be done five yearly
- For women over the age of 65 a test should only be done if they have not been screened since the age of 50 or have had recent abnormal screening tests
**We run cervical smear clinics for any age group. The total cost of the cevical smear test is £90. Please note that you do not need a GP referral.**
