Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese System of healing based on the idea of balance and harmony.
It works on the belief that energy (qi) flows through the body along channels called meridians and that pain or disease occur when there is a blockage in this flow.
The flow of qi can be disturbed by any number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, anger or grief as well as poor nutrition, hereditary factors, infections and trauma. When qi is unbalanced illness may result.
Many women choose to have acupuncture throughout pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, it is increasingly used by couples dealing with problems of infertility or to support IVF treatment.
How can acupuncture help during pregnancy?
Acupuncture aids pregnancy by helping to relieve common associated ailments such as morning sickness, urinary tract infections, sleeping problems, back ache, constipation, and blood pressure problems.
Acupuncture also induces a state of deep relaxation which is of course beneficial to both mother and baby.
Acupuncture plays a key role in the post - natal period, the six week period following child birth. It may help with abdominal cramps, breast discomfort/infection, emotional support, uterine bleeding, night sweats, breast feeding problems, insufficient lactation and post-natal depression.
Can acupuncture help with infertility?
It has been proven in research programs that there is a greater success of pregnancy if acupuncture is received in the pre-conceptual state, also during and after all assisted conceptions (IVF).
Acupuncture can help the flow of blood to the uterus and balance hormones and auto-immune conditions which are critical for conception.
If both partners adopt a pre-conceptual healthcare programme including acupuncture for at least 3– 4 months prior to conception, it is possible to have an impact on the health of both the egg and sperm and reproductive outcomes.
