A cervical Length scan measures the length of the cervix (neck of the womb) at 23 weeks of the pregnancy. This scan is performed transvaginally by inserting an ultrasound probe into the vagina, this gives a better picture. The probe is covered with a condom and gel and doesn’t carry any risk to the pregnancy.
There is evidence that if the cervix is short there is a greater risk of going into labour prematurely. This may help your Obstetrician manage the remainder of your pregnancy.
Your consultation and scan will be with a Maternal and Fetal Medicine Consultant and you will receive black and white (thermal) pictures of your baby and a written report. We will also ask if you would like a copy of the report sent to your GP and the
NHS
Hospital whose care you are under.
