An early scan can be performed at 6 weeks into the pregnancy. During the ultrasound scan we will check:
- your baby’s heartbeat
- when your baby is due ( if over 9 weeks)
- how many babies you are carrying
- some major structural anomalies may be excluded
Often the scan is performed transvaginally by inserting an ultrasound probe into the vagina, this gives a better picture of the womb. The probe is covered with a condom and gel and doesn’t carry any risk to the pregnancy.
Many women gain reassurance from this scan if they:
- are unsure of the date of their last menstrual period
- have previously miscarried
- have had a previous ectopic pregnancy
- are experiencing pain or bleeding in the pregnancy
- have undergone fertility treatment
- for example, just want to check that the pregnancy is progressing well before going on holiday
You will receive black and white (thermal) pictures of your baby and a written report. We will also ask if you would like a copy of the report sent to your GP.
At this scan we will give you information about further scans you can have during your pregnancy. These include the Nuchal Translucency scan that is a screening test for Down's Syndrome and after 14 weeks a Wellbeing scan that can be performed at anytime in the pregnancy.
A wellbeing scan can be combined with a 3D / 4D scan later in the pregnancy which gives you a unique opportunity to see your unborn baby moving in the womb.
