Fibroids are extremely common and do not require treatment unless they are causing symptoms (the most common is heavy periods). Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are diagnosed by clinical examination using ultrasound scanning where they are large.
If you have been diagnosed with fibroids you may wish to have a consultation with one of our consultant gynaecologists to discuss options for the management of the fibroids. Options incude:
- Conservative, regular clinical checks using ultrasound scanning if the fibroids are small and are not causing symptom
- Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) can eliminate the need for hysterectomy in up to 50% of cases. This revolutionary procedure is less invasive than a hysterectomy with a typical hospital stay of two nights and complete recovery time of around 10 days compared to six weeks of recovery with hysterectomy. (UAE) is the process that cases fibroids to shrink, rather than be removed. This is achieved via an interventional radiology procedure that reduces a fibroid in size by blocking its blood supply.
Studies report that 78-94% of women who have the procedure experience significant or total relief from pain and other symptoms and there are numerous reports of successful pregnancies following embolisation for fibroids.
- Surgical Hysterectomy, this is the traditional way to treat fibroids. It does however leave the woman incapable of having children.
- Myomectomy, microwave endometrial ablation, this is a surgical procedure which removes the fibroid(s) but leaves the uterus in place thereby preserving fertility.
Following the consultation you will receive a written report detailing the treatment options discussed, referrals will be made to Dr Paul Crowe, FFRRCSI FRCR, Consultant Interventional Radiologist for Uterine Artery Embolisation.
Following your consultation you will receive a written report. We will also ask if you would like a copy of the report sent to your NHS healthcare provider.
